Want to go to ocean

Was wondering how good the 1978 28' Lancer Sailboat would do on the oregon Coast. Maybe 100 mile trip from Newport Oregon to Charleston Oregon. And one have any input. My last boat was a aquarius 23' swing keel, not made for ocean. ( But did take it to San Jaun Island this year)

Weather permitting it should be fine as long as you are prepared. Passage making is different from sailing. Plan to make 50 miles a day max, so it will take two approximately ten hour days at an average speed of ~5 knots. Don't mess around. If you aren't making time under sail, then power sail or just power. Be sure that your engine is up to the task and that you have adequate fuel. Plan out your stopping point (Florence?) as well as alternatives if something happens. Bring one experienced person along if you are inexperienced. I hired a Captain and we moved my 30 footer 180 miles in three days, most of it motoring due to a lack of wind, but the lack of wind meant we had an uneventful trip from a weather perspective. We ended up in front of a line of thunderstorms at the end with a nice 6+ knot sail from Scituate up to Winthrop. The rain started coming down after the boat was tied up and unloaded.

Thanks BobM! I am rebuilding the 9HP Diesel now. had to low conpression to start well. But has 20 gallon diesel tank so should have good range. And will search for person to go with me.

needless to say...get the charts...a cheap gps wouldn't hurt either. 20 gal should do it. don't neglect to pull and clean the fuel tank during the rebuild if you truly want a problem free drivetrain.

With careful planning and a decent 3-day weather forecast, this is a piece of cake. For extended ocean cruising, that's another story..Don't be afraid of the dark! With good conditions, the ocean is a beautiful place at night. But you need someone who can stand watches and spell you so you can sleep..
